COP26 Daily Preview: Saturday 6th November

The weekend is nearly here! You may have plans, but if not, there's tonnes of superb events you can join and watch taking place at COP26 on Saturday 6th November.

There's another full day of events going on including, the widely publicised Global Day of Action for Climate Justice.

Presidency Programme of Events

The Presidency Programme of Events covers the main negotiations that will take place between world leaders at COP26.

The theme for Saturday at COP26 is Nature and Land Use. Two of the events that form part of this theme took place on Friday 5th November.:

The Green Zone Programme of Events sees youth groups, civil society, academia, artists and businesses host events, exhibitions, cultural performances, workshops and talks throughout COP26.

The Science Pavilion at COP26 is co-hosted by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Met Office.

The first Commonwealth COP26 Pavilion has been organised for COP26. This is a huge gesture from the Commonwealth in the battle against climate change. Meetings, research and side events are all on the agenda

Indigenous Peoples Pavilion at COP26

Indigenous voices are key in the fight against climate change. For too long they have not been heard. It's great to see a pavilion dedicated to Indigenous voices at COP26.

Event Description: “Will the Arctic Warm or Cool?”, exposes participants to the complexity and range of possible outcomes for the Arctic Ocean and Cryosphere. We start with a showing of the award-winning environmental film “Into The Dark” (2020) introduced by Director Michael O. Snyder. The film reports warming of the Arctic through increasing “Atlantification”: responsible is the Atlantic Meridional Overturning circulation (AMOC), feeding warm water directly from the Atlantic. IPCC AR6 expresses only “medium confidence” that the AMOC will not collapse abruptly before 2100. New evidence since AR6 suggests AMOC may be substantially less stable. If AMOC were to collapse, AR6 concludes there would “very likely” be abrupt shifts in Arctic weather and sea level accompanied by cooling of Nordic/Arctic seas – the polar opposite of today’s trajectory of sea ice decline, glacial retreat, reduced snow cover and uncertain impacts on Arctic and northern communities.
