The Commonwealth Human Ecology Council Newsletter – April 2019
Spring has arrived in London, people have been protesting regarding climate change on the streets and CHEC has been working hard to achieve as much as possible. We are in the process of finalising our upcoming Journal, the 29th issue of Human Ecology. This year’s Journal will focus on the development of environmental education and what can be done in education to improve our behaviour towards our threatened planet. We would like to take the chance to thank everyone who has been interested in contributing to the Journal.
On our website and social media channels, CHEC has been focusing on food from a human ecology perspective. We have put together an article where we have summarized some of the latest successes that has been made around the Commonwealth when it comes to battling issues such as overfishing, food waste and deforestation. There isalso an article available on the website looking at palm oil and its impact on the environment.
As some of you may already know, we have started a new project where we will interview the people behind the Commonwealth Human Ecology Council. This is an opportunity for all of you to get a better understanding of who we are and what we wish to achieve with our work. Our first interview is now up on the website! We have had a chat with Eva Ekehorn, Hon. Secretary of CHEC, to hear about her background within Human Ecology and her view of CHEC's work. She is an incredible woman who has dedicated more than 30 years to this organisation.
CHEC is in the process of planning our next Zena Daysh lecture, which will take place later this year. Last year, we had the honour to hear Sir Mark Tully, the renowned veteran BBC journalist and author,speaking about the role of media within India and the Commonwealth. A summary of last year’s lecture is now up on the website, where you can also read about Dame Zena Daysh, a remarkable woman and world- renowned campaigner for human ecology, who founded CHEC in 1969.
We are delighted to announce that CHEC will attend this year’s conference by the Council for Education in the Commonwealth. The theme this year is: Students: Our Common Wealth. A Focus on Students Success, and the conference will take place in Grenada from May 21– May 23, 2019. We are looking forward to sharing the outcomes of the conference with you.
