Draft 1 of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework Launched
This month, the Secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) released the first draft of the new post-2020 global biodiversity framework. The framework will guide actions through 2030 with the ultimate aims of preserving and protecting nature and the services it provides to people.
The framework is considered a stepping stone towards "Living in Harmony with Nature" - a vision to reach by 2050. Therefore, the post-2020 global biodiversity framework consists of 21 targets and 10 milestones to achieve by 2030.
The 21 targets are grouped under specific thematical headings. These are:
- Reducing threats to biodiversity
- Meeting people’s needs through sustainable use and benefit-sharing
- Tools and solutions for implementation and mainstreaming
Similarly, the milestones are grouped under four unique goals. Namely:
- Enhancing the integrity of all ecosystems
- Nature’s contributions to people are valued, maintained or enhanced
- The benefits from the utilization of genetic resources are shared fairly and equitably
- The gap between available financial and other means of implementation, and those necessary to achieve the 2050 Vision, is closed
Therefore, the framework is positioned well to achieve it's aim which is to bring about a transformation in society’s relationship with biodiversity.
The first draft has spent over 2 years in development and will undergo further amendments later this year at the third meeting of the Open Ended Working Group (Virtual).
