18th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers
Between 28th-31st August 2012, CHEC attended the 18th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers in Mauritius. The theme of the conference, “Education in the Commonwealth: Bridging the Gap as we accelerate towards achieving internationally agreed goals”, is particularly relevant at a time when the Secretariat is proposing to close down its active participation in Education. At the meeting, Education Ministers reiterated that Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is not only about climate change but also about other environmental, social, economic and political factors, and it is an issue that requires global action and not only by small states. They also agreed that education should remain a core priority of the Secretariat’s work. The main parallel event was the Stakeholders Forum, organised by the Commonwealth Foundation. The Forum brought together education representatives from business, government, academia, civil society, and the development and donor communities to discuss and debate practical measures to transform education delivery around the Commonwealth. The event was highly successful and CHEC hopes that positive steps can be taken forward from the Conference as we move into a critical phase of our fight against climate change and the associated issues a warming climate can bring.Documents relating to the Conference can be found below:
